Post-Renovation Cleaning in Zürich: Removing Construction Dust Before You Move In

A new kitchen, freshly painted walls, a renovated bathroom – the result looks great, but the dust remains. Fine construction dust settles on every surface, in cupboards, window frames and sockets. A post-renovation cleaning in Zürich means you move into a clean flat instead of dusting for weeks on end. Here you will find out what matters, in which order to clean and what needs to be done beforehand.

What this cleaning is for

We carry out fine cleaning after renovations in flats, houses and smaller commercial premises – removing construction dust and fine residue so the rooms are ready to move into. Typical cases are painting work, a new floor, a kitchen or bathroom refurbishment, or replacement windows.

This does not include the final builders’ cleaning (Bauendreinigung) of large construction sites with rubble, mortar residue or adhesives on a large scale. That work belongs to the construction site and should be done by the building contractor.

Fine dust: why wiping once is not enough

Sanding and plaster dust is very fine. It hangs in the air for a long time, settles gradually and is stirred up again with every step. Anyone who only wipes once with a dry cloth often just spreads the dust around. Proven methods:

  • thorough airing before and during the cleaning
  • vacuuming with a suitable vacuum cleaner instead of dry sweeping
  • then damp-wiping all surfaces
  • where there is a lot of dust, a second pass once the remaining dust has settled

What the tradespeople should finish first

The cleaning is only worthwhile once all dusty work is truly finished. Agree with the tradespeople that the following has been done beforehand:

  • Rubble, packaging, leftover material and tools have been removed
  • Protective sheeting, tape and protective fleece have been removed
  • Heavy soiling such as paint splashes, silicone or mortar residue has been removed
  • Sanding, drilling and painting work is complete, including small touch-ups
  • Electricity and water are working

If there is more drilling or sanding after the cleaning, the dust will quickly be back. So plan the cleaning as the last step before moving in.

The right order

  1. Start at the top: ceilings, walls (where suitable), light fittings, tops of doors and tall cupboards.
  2. Windows, frames and blinds: construction dust collects especially in frames, rebates and slats.
  3. Cupboards inside and out: built-in wardrobes, kitchen cupboards, drawers and shelves.
  4. Kitchen and bathroom: fronts, appliances, taps, tiles, washbasin, shower and toilet.
  5. Details: doors, door frames, switches, sockets, radiators, skirting boards.
  6. Floors last: vacuum first, then mop – suited to the type of flooring.

Which surfaces hold the most dust

In our experience, fine dust collects in places that are easy to overlook: radiator fins, ventilation grilles, window rebates, blind slats, the top edges of doors, drawer runners and skirting boards. These points belong on every checklist.

Frequently asked questions about post-renovation cleaning

When should the cleaning take place?

Only once all tradespeople have finished and no more sanding or drilling is planned – ideally shortly before you move in and before the furniture delivery.

Do you also clean large construction sites?

No. We carry out fine cleaning and removal of construction dust after renovations, but not the final builders’ cleaning of large construction sites.

Do you also remove paint splashes and sheeting?

Sheeting, tape and heavy residue should be removed by the tradespeople. You can show small residues in photos when you enquire, and we will clarify this in advance.

Are windows and blinds cleaned too?

Yes, windows, frames and blinds can be part of the cleaning. Please state the number of windows and the type of blinds in your enquiry.
